Exhibition venue: Galerie KUB, Leipzig

Date: 17/11/2023–02/12/2023

Theme: The exhibition is an artistic reflection on the coexistence of different cultures in the context of globalization, centered on the symbol of the traditional Chinese “HOTPOT”. The theoretical approach is based on the Creolization theory of sociologist Stuart Hall. This theory stipulates that encounters between cultures lead to a process of mixing and exchange from which new cultural forms emerge. These processes of interaction, exchange and permeation are described as inherently dynamic, going beyond a simple merging of different cultures. They are thus rarely smooth sailing, but rather full of contradictions and conflicts. Hall emphasizes that creolization involves not only the exploring and expanding of culture, but also the challenging and restructuring of cultural identity. Art researcher Larissa Buchholz explains the role Hall assigns to culture in globalized modernity as follows: “Culture has become both an instrument of power and a medium of representation – the ‘movement of power is inseparable from the movement of images, the movement of information.’” In this context, our art exhibition functions on two levels, on the one hand showing a representation of cultural values and on the other hand providing a platform to reflect on power structures in unequal resource distribution and global negotiations.

For this exhibition, we will provide the following:

  1. Official invitation to participate in the exhibition, advertising in the media, full insurance premium for the artwork, professional exhibition space with security and maintenance;
  2. Transport costs for artists in Germany can be partially reimbursed;
  3. – Shortlisted exhibiting artists will have the opportunity to participate in a residency program put together by the team.

Types of artworks: Videos, video installations, audio works and performances are welcome in this project. We are focusing especially on audio and video works.

Number of participants: 10-12 artists

Application documents

  1. CV
    Include your contact information (e-mail, etc.), educational background, and a description of your previous artistic work (two pages maximum).
  2. commentary for each work to be shown 
    • in English or German
    • Number of pieces to be exhibited / minimum one, maximum three works or a series.
    • Basic information about the artwork (e.g. title, dates, year of creation, materials used, etc.)
    • Explanation of the artwork or its relation to the subject (maximum 200 words, except for poems).

Installations and performances must be submitted as a portfolio with images. Associated video and audio files can be uploaded to the WeTransfer platform and a link to download the file or an existing online link can be included in the work information. Images must be submitted in JPG format (larger than 1 MB) and videos in mp4 format.

Thema: Die Ausstellung verwendet das Sinnbild das traditionellen chinesischen „HOTPOT“, um die Koexistenz unterschiedlicher Kulturen im Kontext der Globalisierung künstlerisch zu beleuchten. Der theoretische Ansatz basiert auf der Creolization-Theorie des Soziologen Stuart Hall. Gemäß seiner Theorie führen Begegnungen zwischen Kulturen zu einem Prozess der Vermischung und des Austauschs, aus dem sich neue kulturelle Formen herausbilden. Entscheidend ist in diesem Modell die inhärente Dynamik, die die Interaktion, den Austausch und das Durchdringen verschiedener Kulturen charakterisiert und die über ein einfaches Zusammenfügen verschiedener Kulturen hinausgeht. Dabei handelt es sich keineswegs um einen reibungslosen Vorgang, sondern vielmehr um einen Prozess voller Widersprüche und Konflikte. Hall betont, dass die Creolization nicht nur eine Erkundung und Erweiterung der Kultur, sondern auch eine Herausforderung und Umstrukturierung der kulturellen Identität beinhaltet. Die Kunstforscherin Larissa Buchholz erklärt die Rolle, die Hall der Kultur in der globalisierten Moderne zuweist, mit folgenden Worten: „Kultur [ist] gleichermaßen zu einem Instrument der Macht wie zu einem Medium der Repräsentation aufgestiegen – die ‚Bewegung der Macht ist untrennbar von der Bewegung von Bildern, der Bewegung von Informationen‘.“ In diesem Zusammenhang erfüllt unsere Kunstausstellung eine doppelte Funktion, indem sie einerseits kulturelle Werte abbildet und andererseits eine Plattform bietet, um über Machtstrukturen in ungleicher Ressourcenverteilung und in globalen Verhandlungen zu reflektieren. zwangsläufig – zum Nachdenken an.

Für diese Ausstellung werden wir folgendes zur Verfügung stellen:

  1. Offizielle Einladung zur Teilnahme an der Ausstellung, Werbung in den Medien, volle Versicherungsprämie für das Kunstwerk, professionelle Präsentation der Ausstellung mit Bewachung und Wartung;
  2. Ein Teil der Transportkosten für Künstler in Deutschland wird bezuschusst;
  3. Die in die engere Wahl gezogenen ausstellenden Künstler erhalten die Möglichkeit, an einem vom Team zusammengestellten Aufenthaltsprogramm teilzunehmen.

Medium der Kunstwerke: Videos, Videoinstallationen, Audioarbeiten und Performances sind bei diesem Projekt willkommen. Wir wollen uns auf Sound- und Videoarbeiten konzentrieren.

Teilnehmerzahl: 10-12 KünstlerInnen

主题：展览题为“Hot Pot–火锅”的目标是通过以传统中国美食“火锅”作为象征以艺术的方式讨论全球化背景下不同文化共存的问题。理论基础来自社会学家斯图尔特·霍尔（Stuart Hall），他提出了克里奥化（Creolization）理论。克里奥利泽是指不同文化之间的融合和交流，它为新的文化形式的产生提供了基础。霍尔将这一过程视为动态过程，是不同文化之间互动、交流和渗透的结果，而不仅仅是不同文化的组合。这一过程并不是顺利进行的，而是充满了矛盾和冲突。霍尔强调，克里奥化不仅是对文化的探索和扩展，也是对文化身份的挑战和重构。

艺术研究者拉里莎·布克霍尔茨（Larissa Buchholz）补充说，全球化第四阶段的独特之处在于文化已经同时成为权力工具和代表性媒介的一部分。她指出：“权力的运动不可分割地与图像的流动和信息的传播相伴而生。” 在这一背景下，我们的艺术展览具有一个重要功能，即展示文化价值观，并反映全球化中资源分配和协商中的不公平情况。

针对本次展览我们将提供：

  1. 正式的参展邀请函、媒体宣传推广、艺术品全额保险费、专业展示呈现与安全保护及维护；
  2. 在德艺术家部分交通补贴；
  3. 入围参展艺术家将有机会参与团队搭建的艺术驻留项目。

艺术作品类型：本项目欢迎任意种类型的影像、影像装置、音频作品和行为表演

招募对象：10-12位 青年艺术家
